The concert site can be found between enormous rocky outcroppings, with all the lighting of Denver twinkling in the space. Great Sand Dunes National Park and Preserve is unlike anywhere else in Colorado along with also a must-see for those who haven’t been. Come in early summer when Medano Creek is flowing and you’re able to climb the dunes barefoot without burning off your feet.

Day hike to a unique spot close to the Front Range
Just because you live in Denver or Colorado Springs doesn’t mean that you can’t even encounter the beauty of the mountains on a simple day hike. There are many destinations which you can visit and be home in time for the afternoon nap. Staunton State Park is wonderful day trip, with jagged cliffs and waterfalls along with a robust trail system. Another simple escape is Saint Mary’s Glacier, a small hike beginning near Interstate 70 west of Denver.
Explore ancient cliff dwellings
Over 600 years before Colorado became a country there was a thriving civilization in the Southwest which left one of the wonderful archaeological wonders of North America: the cliff dwellings of Mesa Verde National Park. Built in places that look impossible to contemporary eyes, also without modern instruments, the cliff dwellings stand as a nod to the Anasazi (Ancestral Puebloan) civilization, which thrived and disappeared for reasons no one is really sure of, all before Columbus “found ” the Americas. Tour the dwellings and wonder if our cities likely have similar remaining power in 600 decades.

Camp at (or at least hike to) a hill lake
John Denver had it right — there’s nothing much more serene than a clear blue mountain lake.
