new south africa wineVineyards in Helderberg,

I returned to the windy crystal-lit Cape for the first time in nearly five years in late February. Harvest had ended for others, and was in full swing for some.

Astonishingly enough, will our kids come to respect February in the southern hemisphere, and August in the north? If you believe that phenolic maturity is the trick to flavour growth and that there is an optimum interval (neither too long nor too short) over that it may be obtained, such early harvest dates cannot be welcomed.

‘No country outside Europe has made more progress on complex wine combinations than South Africa. ’
