More than 15 years ago, Dan Smith place to operate on a solo project that he predicted Listener. That solo endeavor has grown to include among his best friends and is now known affectionately to lovers since the Listener Family Band. With eight full blown records under their belt, Listener has generated a cult-like after. They’ll take the stage in Denver on May 30, together with Quentin Suave and Birds at a Row — inviting both new and old fans to connect with Listener family.
Even though Listener’s fan base is smaller than you’d expect to get a ring with their touring background, their following is dedicated. This fact enables them to play smaller, more intimate displays — in reality, even after 15 years of traveling, it’s not uncommon for Listener to play home displays. Listener’s music brings clear impacts from hip-hop, which can be most evident on their debut record, Whispermoon. Smith’s lyrics create clear reference to his hip roots, along with his vocal delivery layered over straightforward beats is a clear homage to the genre. But over 15 years later, Listener’s sound has developed a long time. The hip and rap influences remain clearly present, but the music now fits into a genre all it’s very own — and Listener understands better than anybody else. Today’s lovers have come to love Listener’s unique genre of sound that they call “talk music. ”
Even though Listener’s ancient music could be a dose of nostalgia for hip hop lovers, the true reason for the groups devoted following is Smith’s powerful lyricism.
